1 Saw-Ginned Dharwar Cotton
A mixture of Upland American (G. Hirsutum) and New Orleans (G. Mexican) types of American cotton, the former predominating. Acclimatised in southern part of the Dharwar district and in Northern Mysore. Slightly inferior to, but distinctly less leafy than Kumptas. So called because at one time it was largely saw-ginned, but is now mainly roller-ginned. Staple 3/4-in. to 1/8-in. Ginning 30 per cent. Same as saw-ginned Dharwar. Most of this cotton is now roller-ginned. -
3 Bale
The standard Indian bale is 400-lb. gross (392-lb. net), in Madras, 500-lb. bales are common. The limits of weight allowed in Bombay are: - Cambadia, Tinnevelly, and Karunganni, 340 min., 530 max. All other cotton, 340 min., 450 max. If delivered against forward contracts, the weight of 100 bales must be within the following limits: - Cambodia, Tinnevelly, and Karunganni, 49 candies min. (784-lb.), 64 candies max. Saw-ginned, Dharwar and Machine-ginned Kumpta, 46 candies min., 51 candies max. All others, 49 candies min., 51 candies max. Differences outside this range are at the buyer's option. The dimensions vary considerably, but the average Indian bale of 400-lb gross is about 48-in. X 20-in. X 16-in.
